Project 58 – Benjamin’s Second Wind

Two years ago, Benjamin reached out to us for a pair of wooden aero bars. At the time, he didn’t yet have a complete bike project in mind. His request came more from simple curiosity. A desire to try something different.

By late 2025 he came back. He was looking for a companion to ride around his area, to complement his running training, to vary his efforts without compromising on rigour. For someone like Benjamin who runs seriously and frequently, the bike isn’t a substitute. It’s a balance.
He wanted a machine capable of linking tarmac and trails without jarring transitions. A comfortable yet responsive bike — hence the choice of walnut. Elegant, without being showy. Made near home.

We opted for a Zafi Roots.
A frame crafted by Simon, with taut, compact lines designed for acceleration and fluidity. The wood brings that natural vibration-damping that makes a difference after an intense running session. Those who look closely will notice olive inlays on either side of the ZAFI logo as well as a cherry plywood plate echoing patterns on the top tube.

Then come the details: the Zafi bottle cages in ebonised walnut. Discreet. Deep. Cohesive with the frame. It’s these elements that transform a high-performance build into a personal bicycle.
